Crash games: how they work and how to play them sensibly

A line climbs, a multiplier ticks up, and you have to cash out before it crashes. Crash games are the simplest thing in the casino to learn and one of the hardest to walk away from.

The first time you play a crash game, it feels almost too simple. You place a bet before the round. The round starts at 1.00x and climbs: 1.20x, 1.50x, 2.00x, faster and faster. Press cash out and you win your stake times the multiplier at that moment. Wait too long and the round crashes, and your stake is gone.

That is the whole game. The tension comes from the fact that the crash point is random. It can bust at 1.01x. It can run past 100x. You never know which round is which.

What decides the crash point

Every round's crash point is set by a random generator before the round starts. The rising line on your screen just reveals it. Most crash games use a "provably fair" system: the game publishes a coded value (a hash) before the round, and afterwards you can check that the result matches it. In plain terms, the operator could not change the crash point once betting opened.

Because the crash point is random each round, previous rounds tell you nothing about the next one. A run of early crashes does not make a big multiplier "due". This is the single most important thing to understand before you play.

Reading the numbers

A useful way to think about crash games: the higher the multiplier you aim for, the less often you will reach it.

Target cash-outRough chance of reaching it*What it feels like
1.20xMost roundsSmall, frequent wins
2.00xAround half the roundsCoin-flip territory
5.00xAbout one round in fivePatient, swingy
10.00xAbout one round in tenLong dry spells
50.00x and upRareLottery-style

*Approximate, for a typical crash game. Each game has its own maths, and the house edge means the long-run return is always below what you stake.

Notice the pattern: aiming for 2x wins about half the time, 10x about a tenth of the time. The return over many rounds ends up roughly the same whichever target you choose, minus the house edge. Your target changes how bumpy the ride is, not whether you come out ahead.

Features you will find in most crash games

Three approaches players use

The low and steady

Auto cash-out at 1.3x to 1.5x. You win more rounds than you lose, but each loss wipes out several wins. Works for players who like a calm session.

The split bet

Two bets: one with auto cash-out at 1.5x to cover the stake, one left to run towards 3x or 5x. It smooths the swings slightly and keeps the excitement of a bigger multiplier.

The long shot

Small stakes, high targets like 10x or 20x. Expect long losing runs. Only for players who have budgeted for that.

None of these beats the house edge. They are ways to shape your session, not systems that make money. Be very wary of anyone selling a crash "strategy" that claims otherwise.

Practise for free first

The fastest way to understand how a crash game feels is to play it without money. Free Casino Lobby has free demo versions of crash games, no account or download needed. Ten minutes there will show you how quickly a bankroll can swing at different cash-out targets.

Crash games on mobile

Crash games are built for phones: a single screen, one big button. Every casino here has an app for iPhone and Android that you install straight from its website; see our casino apps guide for the steps. Play in portrait so the cash-out button is under your thumb.

Keep it in proportion

Crash rounds are short, often 10 to 30 seconds, and there is no natural pause between them. That speed is part of the fun and part of the risk. Set a loss limit before you start, use auto cash-out rather than chasing the line, and stop when the budget is gone. Our responsible gambling guide has the tools to make that easier.

When you want a change of pace, try online slots or a hand at the live casino.

Frequently asked questions

Can you predict when a crash game will crash?

No. Each crash point is random and set before the round starts. Past rounds have no effect on future ones.

What is a good cash-out multiplier?

There is no best number. Low targets like 1.5x win more often but pay less; high targets win rarely but pay more. Over time the return is similar, minus the house edge.

What does provably fair mean?

The game publishes a coded value before each round so you can check afterwards that the crash point was not changed once bets were placed.

Can I play crash games for free?

Yes. Free Casino Lobby has crash game demos with no account or deposit. For real stakes without a deposit, LuckySlotPlay gives €5 free with code LUCK5.

Do crash games count towards casino bonus wagering?

It depends on the casino's bonus terms. Check the game contribution table in the promotions or cashier section before you play.
